Yet,
another "rare" breed was the Australian Shepherd, Wally and Jayne Holligan's
Am Ch Thornapple Climate Controlled. This US-bred dog now has 11
BOBs and six group placings. Ellen Brandenburg, his breeder, made her first
trip to the UK to see him take the breed. BB was Bel Ch Snowcrest's
Shameless Flirt.

Breed Judge
A breed I admire
very much, I was thrilled to judge a strong entry at this prestigious show.
Exhibitors & spectators were generous in their applause of all winners, long
may that continue. All exhibits were clean & shown in excellent condition.
Due to over zealous grooming or methods used many exhibits lacked undercoat,
in the breed's functional world this would render them exposed to the
elements. More offensive to the eye, however, were the few cases of barbered
furnishings, which looks so unnatural. There was some variety in type & a
few factors that definitely need consideration & thought. As with other
breeds, there was divergence in head construction but an overstrong short
muzzle gives quite the wrong expression. The Standard is specific as regards
to eye shape & I felt that too many exhibits had round eyes & this caused me
some concern. General construction pleased although soundness of movement &
style of action did vary & a few were uncoordinated. Temperaments pleased.
Open Dog (14, 1):
1. Holligan's Am Ch Thornapple Climate Controlled, quality lad with a
lovely head, eye & intelligent expression. Moderate neck with gentle arch
on well placed shoulders, straight legs with correct bone & feet. Deep
chest with well sprung ribs, level topline, gentle slope to croup to well
constructed & muscled hindquarters. Ultra sound & typical movement which is
a joy to watch. Excellent coat & general condition. I considered him a
most worthy ambassador for the breed in the group. Congratulations on Group
2, Best Dog & Best of Breed.

Derek Smith * Crufts Pastoral Group Judge
I ALWAYS feel
honoured when asked to do a group, never more so than when I was invited to
judge the pastoral group at Crufts. No matter what anyone may say, Crufts
is special - it has atmosphere like no other show, and when the group judges
for the first day, Jack Bispham and I , were invited to meet Prince Michael
of Kent and receive a memento of the occasion from him it made this special
show the highlight of my judging career, to date.
Having been
involved as a breeder/exhibitor within this group since the '60s, I looked
forward to the job in hand enormously, and I was certainly not
disappointed. The breed judges had indeed done me proud and 28 quality
exhibits paraded before me, certainly no easy task to make a short-list of
eight.
These were the
Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Puli, Old English Sheepdog, Polish
Lowland, Pyrenean, Samoyed and Pem Corgi, all in super condition and all
trying so hard.................................................
Group 2, the
Australian Shepherd, Am Ch Thornapple Climate Controlled, the
ultimate show dog, always standing four square and always attentive to his
handler, lovely bone and feet, so well made making him so good to go over,
whiter than white and his black body coat shining with well-being. Like the
winner, excellent on the move.
